What to Do If Someone Ingests Poison (Step-by-Step Guide)


If someone swallows something harmful, quick and correct action is critical.

Signs of Poisoning

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Confusion

  • Burns around the mouth

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Drowsiness or unconsciousness

Call for Help

  • Call 911 if severe symptoms

  • Otherwise call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222)

What NOT to Do

  • Do not induce vomiting

  • Do not give food or drink unless instructed

  • Do not use home remedies

What TO Do

  • Stay with the person

  • Identify the substance

  • Gather information for responders

If Unresponsive

  • Check breathing

  • Start CPR if needed

  • Use recovery position if breathing

Prevention

  • Store chemicals safely

  • Label properly

  • Follow instructions
